The technologies and equipment used for plastic-coated steel pipes were initially introduced from abroad. Building on these imported technologies, Chinese engineers have subsequently developed a series of new plastic-coated pipe products. Today, the manufacturing process for these pipes has become fully mature in China and is widely promoted across the country. The state has also issued a set of relevant standards and specifications for this type of pipe. The raw materials for these pipes are plastic powder and steel pipes; the plastic powder used is either EP or PE, while the steel pipe material is Q235 carbon steel. The two materials are combined through high-temperature thermal spraying technology to form a composite structure. The quality of the finished products undergoes rigorous inspection, with each performance indicator subjected to stringent testing. Moreover, these pipes can also be manufactured using hot-dip plastic coating and rotational molding processes. While hot-dip plastic coating and rotational molding offer relatively short production cycles, their coating adhesion is not as strong as that achieved by thermal spraying. Thermal spraying is particularly well-suited for the processing of epoxy-resin-based plastic-coated composite pipes.
During construction, its connection methods are the same as those used in conventional systems—threaded connections, clamp fittings, and flanges—and bimetallic welding can also be employed. If the pipeline is buried and carries water, bimetallic welding is recommended.
The advantages of steel pipes coated and compounded with plastic are remarkable—such as the coating’s resistance to peeling, excellent corrosion resistance, a theoretical service life of 60 years, and high mechanical pressure resistance. Precisely because these advantages are so prominent, these pipes have found widespread application.
