Oil and gas pipelines are predominantly made of steel pipes. If left unprotected and buried underground—even in dry desert environments—they will quickly succumb to corrosion. Therefore, to ensure these pipelines perform optimally, we need to select corrosion-resistant steel pipes. Today, there are many types of corrosion-resistant steel pipes available on the market, including 3PE-coated pipes, TPEP-coated pipes, and epoxy-resin-coated pipes. Among these, 3PE-coated pipes boast superior corrosion resistance, moisture-proof properties, and mechanical performance, making them widely used in the oil pipeline industry. At first glance, 3PE-coated pipes look very similar to plastic-coated pipes. So, how can we distinguish between 3PE-coated pipes and plastic-coated pipes?

One: Different meanings

Coated pipes are made by using steel pipes as the base material and employing hot-dip polyethylene or epoxy resin as the primary anti-corrosion materials. Through processes such as spraying, rolling, dipping, and suction, a polyethylene anti-corrosion coating is welded onto the inner surface of the steel pipe, or an epoxy anti-corrosion coating is welded onto both the inner and outer surfaces. 3PE anti-corrosion steel pipes refer to externally coated steel pipes with a three-layer polyolefin coating. The base material can be seamless steel pipes, spiral steel pipes, or straight-seam steel pipes, and their anti-corrosion structure consists of one layer of epoxy powder, two layers of adhesive, and three layers of polyethylene.

II: Different performance characteristics

Plastic-coated pipes exhibit excellent corrosion resistance and withstand both high and low temperatures. Their superior insulation properties make them ideal as protective conduits for electrical wires, virtually eliminating the risk of electric leakage. They also boast strong anti-interference capabilities; when used as cable sleeves, plastic-coated steel pipes can effectively shield against external signal interference. Furthermore, these pipes have good pressure resistance and smooth inner walls, making them suitable for use as cable-laying conduits.

3PE-coated steel pipes boast a long service life, high molecular weight, excellent stability, and outstanding resistance to aging. Under normal temperature and pressure conditions, their service life can exceed 50 years, and even after prolonged operation, they continue to save substantial resources and significantly reduce energy costs. At the same time, these pipes exhibit strong waterproof and anticorrosive properties, effectively resisting chemical corrosion from natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, synthetic gas, and other similar substances. Chemical substances in the soil have no degrading effect on the pipeline. Additionally, these pipes are lightweight, easy to handle, simple to install, and can be directly buried underground or underwater without the need for additional trenching.
