3PE anti-corrosion steel pipes are categorized into standard, enhanced, and extra-enhanced grades, with prices ranging from approximately 35 to 50 yuan per square meter. The base materials include seamless steel pipes, spiral steel pipes, and straight-seam steel pipes. Due to their excellent corrosion resistance, resistance to water vapor permeation, and mechanical properties, the anti-corrosion coatings of 3PE steel pipes have been widely adopted in the oil pipeline industry.

3PE Anti-Corrosion Steel Pipe—The anti-corrosion coating plays a crucial role in determining the service life of buried pipelines. Even pipes made of the same material can exhibit vastly different corrosion resistance: some remain intact for decades underground, while others start leaking within just a few years. This difference stems from the use of various external anti-corrosion coatings. Before undergoing anti-corrosion treatment, the base material of 3PE anti-corrosion steel pipes must be inspected and recorded upon arrival at the pipe-handling platform. Next, the outer surface of the steel pipe is blast-cleaned to remove rust. Following this, the cleanliness and anchorage depth of the pipe’s outer surface are checked to ensure they meet the specified requirements. If they do not meet these requirements, the surface is repaired by hand-grinding with an abrasive wheel. Then, tape is wrapped around the pipe ends, dust is removed, the pipe is heated to the required temperature using medium-frequency induction heating, epoxy powder is sprayed onto the pipe surface, adhesive is extruded and wound on one side of the pipe using an adhesive extruder, PE is extruded and wound on the other side using a PE extruder, and finally, the coated pipe is cooled with water to complete the anti-corrosion process.

3PE anti-corrosion steel pipes refer to three-layer polyolefin-coated anti-corrosion steel pipes, which are commonly used in China. Other anti-corrosion methods include IPN8710, FBE epoxy powder coatings, and epoxy coal tar coatings. Typically, these methods focus on the corrosion protection of the outer surface of steel pipes. The 3PE anti-corrosion coating for structural steel pipe exteriors generally consists of three layers: the first layer is an epoxy powder, the second layer is an adhesive measuring 170 to 250 microns, and the third layer is polyethylene ranging from 2.5 to 3.7 millimeters. In actual application, these three materials are blended into a single composite material and firmly bonded to the steel pipe through processing, forming an excellent anti-corrosion barrier. The processing methods typically fall into two categories: wrap-around application and extrusion-coating using a die. The 3PE anti-corrosion coating for steel pipes is a novel type of anti-corrosion coating developed by ingeniously combining European 2PE anti-corrosion coatings with the widely used epoxy powder coatings for steel pipes in North America. Over the past decade or so, it has gained widespread recognition and adoption worldwide.

The coating of 3PE anti-corrosion steel pipes consists of a bottom layer—a epoxy powder anti-corrosion coating that directly contacts the steel pipe surface—followed by an intermediate layer made of a copolymer adhesive containing branched functional groups. The top layer is a high-density polyethylene anti-corrosion coating. The 3PE anti-corrosion coating combines the excellent impermeability and high mechanical performance of both epoxy resin and polyethylene materials. To date, it has been widely recognized as one of the world’s most effective and high-performance pipeline anti-corrosion coatings, and as such, it has been extensively used in numerous engineering projects. The 3PE anti-corrosion steel pipes currently being loaded onto trucks, along with the corresponding anti-corrosion process flow diagrams, are divided into two types: one uses hot-melt epoxy powder for anti-corrosion treatment, and the other employs liquid epoxy coatings, typically the liquid epoxy IPN8710.
